In 1871, after he married Jane Ramsay, who was also from Scotland, he had progressed to being a farmer and lived in Horton Village, just a short walk from Cleadon Hill where he lived for 20 years.

He returned to being a labourer by 1881 and he was living in Mill house next to the farm where had lived with his sister and her family. Living also in Mill House was her sister and her retired farmer husband. The farm which was now just called Hill Farm was run by James Purvis who had married the youngest sister of Peter, Christina.
