From History of Family von Nida, Jack E. Nida, 1966, pp. 45-47: "Peter Nida (son of David): b. 1777 d. 1849 Married Elizbeth Shuck (born 1779, died 1849) on June 9, 1796. Peter Nida was probably born in Berkeley County, Virginia. The date of his birth is obtained from family records (1). Undoubtedly he went with his parents to Botetourt County a few years after he was born. He married Elizabeth Shuck June 9, 1796. The ceremony was performed in Botetourt County by Reverend Samuel Gray (5). February 10, 1807, "David Neday and Mary his wife" "for and in consideration of their natural love and affection they bear to their son Peter and also for the further consideration of $2.00" give to Peter 118 acres of land in the valley of Sinking Creek, 70 acres of which was patented by Absalom Looney, July 19, 1787 (6). October 13, 1807 "Peter Neday and his wife Elizabeth" for $466 (7) sold to John Leffle 118 acres in the Valley of Sinking Creek. Peter Nida owned property in Giles County, Virginia (probably in that part which later became a part of Craig County, Virginia (8). He sold his property in that county November 3, 1828 (8), and moved to Gallia County, Ohio. He probably went by way of the Greenbriar Valley and Kanawha Valley, which was one of the much frequented routes to Ohio from Virginia. January 4, 1831 he purchased a quarter section of land in Walnut Township, Gallia County, Ohio (9). This was in what is known as the "Lincoln Ridge" settlement. "Peter Cave Creek" in that township was named after him. His house was on the hill just north on the foot of "Salem Hill" (or "Drummond Hill" as it is sometimes called, being the hill on which the old Salem Church was once located). The old road leading to his house connects with the county road at the foot of "Salem Hill". It is said (10) that the house was of logs and two stories in height. His barn, also of logs, was said to have been exceptionally large, permitting a team and wagon to drive through it. In signing documents his name was variously spelled Nida, Niday and Nidy. Earlier instruments use Nida while later ones use the Niday and Nidy. Most of his descendants now living there use Niday. Peter's will was executed by him October 12, 1843. (The original will in possession of the writer). It made no mention of his wife although she is supposed to have been alive at that time. His son Lewis was named executor and is given the farm. The will also mentions Nancy Drummond, Polly Clark and Betsey Clark. According to two grandsons(11) (both alive in 1932) of Peter, both Peter and his wife Elizabeth died during a cholera epidemic which took many lives in Walnut Township during the year 1849. The cholera being brought to the community by ___ Martt (a relative through one of Peter's daughters). It is said (11) that both died unattended as all of the family were sick and the neighbors were afraid to come near the house. Both were buried in the Drummond Graveyard (near the old Salem Church). Peter's grave is unmarked. Beside the grave of the wife of Lewis Nida, there is a headstone of badly eroded sandstone from which may be read "Elizabeth" and "1779". It is believed that this is the marker for the grave of Elizabeth (Shuck) Nida. If this is true it would indicate that she was born in 1779. Maps of Gallia County for the year 1874 show "William Shuck" as owning property in Walnut Township, adjoining the Lawrence County Line. Perhaps this was a relative of Elizabeth (Shuck) Nida. It is also believed that the name "Shook" is derived from "Shuck". Children of Peter Nida spelled their names in various ways. The following spellings are those which were usually used in each case. All were born in Botetourt or Gallia County. Children: David Nida b. 1797 John Niday Peter Niday b. 1800 Jacob Nida William Nida b. 1807 Henry Nida Lewis Nida b. 1816 Polly (Mary) Niday Katherine Niday Nancy Nida Elizabeth Niday Footnotes: 1)Brief manuscript prepared about 1880 and now in possession of F.B. (Ben) Niday of Mercerville, Ohio. 5)Family records(1) show her name to be "Shuck". Records of Botetourt County, Virginia, Marriage Register #1, p. 256, give her name as "Eliza. Shuke". The marriage was "by banns". "Annals of South West Virginia"(Summers) erroneously says that Peter married Jane Dunbar. The records of the County do not bear this out, but, as shown, gives his wife's name as "Shuke". 6)Deed Book #9, p. 250 - Botetourt County, Virginia. 7)Deed Book #9, p. 353 - Botetourt County, Virginia. 8)Letter from County Clerk of Giles County, Virginia. Sold to James Martin. 9)N.E. 1/4 of Sec. 25 - Recorder's Office, Gallia County, Ohio. 10)___ Walters, a resident of the vicinity. 11)Oliver Niday and Emery D. Niday. This is also confirmed by statements made by another grandson."
