Peter Douma, 92, of Lynden, went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, Oct. 2, 2005. He was born Nov. 3, 1912 in Huntley, Montana to Henry and Magdelena Bakker Douma. In 1934, at the age of 21, he moved to Lynden. On Aug. 1, 1939, he married Johanna Jager. They were the first couple of Third Christian Reformed Church to be married, where he was a deacon and faithful member until his death. He started Lynden Sheet Metal in 1940 with John Wynstra, took a brief time off during the war to work in the Bellingham Shipyards, retiring after 37 years. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, woodworking projects for his children and grandchildren and loved volunteering for projects at Lynden Christian School. Preceded in death by his parents; son, Kenneth; and sisters, Nellie Andriesen and Winnie DeVries. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Johanna; daughter, Connie Dave Burns of Lynden; son, Dean Gail Douma of Redmond; daughter-in-law, Joyce Dave Langley of Bellingham; 12 Grandchildren; 21 Great-Grandchildren; sisters, Klazina Carl and Sophia Van Wyk; numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation hours will be Wed., Oct. 5 from 1 to 9 pm at Gillies Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 1 pm, Thurs., Oct. 6 at Monumenta Cemetery with Pastor Henry Numan officiating. Memorial services will follow at 2 pm at Third Christian Reformed Church, 514 Liberty St., Lynden with Pastor Tom Kok officiating.
