    PETER CLARK

Son of Benjamin and Susanna (Bass) Clark, was born in Concord, N.H., January 24, 1802. His father, a native of Braintree, Mass., died at Orford, N. H., in 1844. His mother, who died at Orford in 1824, was a lineal descendant of John Alden of the Plymouth Colony.

He was prepared for college at Plainfield and Haverhill, N. H. He entered the Class, in 1823, from Orford ; remained until the close of Junior year; and then entered Union College, Schenectady, N. Y., where he graduated in 1827. The honorary degree of A. M. was conferred upon him by our own College in 1844. Immediately after graduating, he went south, and was President of Washington College, Md., for nearly three years. Returning to New York, he completed his professional studies ; and was admitted to the practice of law in that State, in 1832, and subsequently in the Federal Courts. In 1847, he removed to West Virginia, where he resided until 1853, when he returned to New York. During the rebellion, he resided in St. Louis in the service of the Government of the United States, and was an earnest supporter of the Union cause. In 1865, he returned from St. Louis to Brooklyn, N. Y., where he now resides.

He has written much on political subjects, and has been for twenty years past much occupied with Internal Improvements in Virginia and other States. He has also been active in promoting the cause of Education, especially in the City of Brooklyn.

In 1827, he married Philena, daughter of Capt. Aaron Mann, of Orford, N.H. She died in 1831, leaving one Son, Philenus Mann, who died in 1855.

In 1832, he married Emeline Adams, daughter of Nathaniel Putnam, of Waterville, N. Y., by whom he has had four children, all living: George Putnam, Emeline Mary E., John Alden, and Edgar Bartow.
