Enlisted for 12 months' service on 6/18/1861 at Junction Store, Botetourt County, VA., he traveled to White Sulphur Springs, (now West) VA., where he was mustered into Company K, 60th Virginia Infantry as a Private, joining 4 other men of the Broughman family/clan.
Present or accounted for until listed as sick in Cosawhatchie, Jasper County, SC., hospital on 12/29/1861.
Present on Jan & Feb Roll.
Reenlisted in early 1862 for 3 years or duration of the war.
Present on all Rolls until given 20-day Furlough 12/16/1862.
Present on all subsequent Rolls through end of war.
The 60th Virginia Infantry Regiment [also called 3rd Regiment, Wise Legion] was organized in August, 1861.
Later in the war it was attached to the Department of Western Virginia and East Tennessee and participated in numerous conflicts including the fight at Piedmont. The 60th took part in Early's operations in the Shenandoah Valley and fought its last battle at Waynesboro, VA. During mid-April, 1865, it disbanded.
