About Peter Allumbaugh

In 1774, Peter Allumbaugh was listed in Captain John Lewis' company as a volunteer from Botetourt County. Peter the first (b.1740) together with parents & family numbering 14 in all took passage from shores of Holland, crossing ocean on a sailing vessel, many months were required in crossing & during voyage, cholera broke out on board and entire family died with the exception of this one boy, Peter. They were buried at sea. In the course of time Peter found himself on the shores of the new world ALONE at the early age of 14. Voyage was about 1754. Peter served in Indian wars and inlisted in Revolutionary War against England one year. Enlisted 1775 at Greenbrier, VA. under Captain Arbuckle. Lived in Greenbrier Co., VA. Now disbanded. Heads of Families Census 1790, 1783-1786, page 109 lists Peter Elmbough 1800 Census, Madison Co., Kentucky lists Peter Alumbaugh. Peter came to KY about 1790-settled on west bank of Muddy Creek at its Boone Branch, believed to be near Old Cain Spring Church in N W corner of county. Only a few miles to the west of the Allumbaugh's property is the historic fort of Boonesborough, founded by Daniel & Squire Boone in 1775. Good farm land. First decent farm land the settlers came to was in Madsion Co. After going through Cumberland Gap. Peter's request for pension at age 82 stated "Peter was a Cooper by occupation-1822., served under Captain Mathew Arbuckle, 12th Virginia Regiment.Coopers make and repair barrels, kegs, etc. MyTrees.com

  • 1781 April 18 - Greenbrier County: Court Order Book notes James Byrnsides verses Peter Elembouch (Allumbaugh), defendant, did not appear in court and was ordered a conditional judgment, with Garret Green the security for the defendant.     Kentucky Madison Circuit Sct. September Term 1822
    On this 3 day of September 1822 personally appeared in open Court being a Court of Record for the State of Kentucky and County and Circuit of Madison Peter Allumbaugh aged eighty two years who being first duly sworn according to law did on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the provision made by the acts of Congress of the 18 March 1818 and of the first of May 1820 that he the said peter Allumbaugh enlisted for the term of one year in the year 1775 [sic: see endnote] in Greenbrier County [formed in part from Botetourt County in 1778] State of Virginia in Captain Mathew Arbuckles Company he thinks the 12 Virginia Regiment in the Continental establishment Commanded by Colo. [blankl] That he Continued to serve in said company until the end of the year for which he enlisted as aforesaid and at the end of said year he was Regularly Discharged from said service at the mouth of Kanhawa [sic: Kanawha River] and that his Discharge was Destroyed by his having his House unfortunately consumed by fire that he has no other evidence of his said servises now in his Possession except the affavideit of Alexander Reed hereto annexed – And in pusuance of the act of the first of May 1820 he solamly swore that he was a resident Citizen of the united States on the 18 Day of March 1818 and that he has not since that time by gift sale or in any manner Disposed of his property or any part thereof with intent thereby so to Diminish the same as to bring himself within the provisions of an act of Congress entitled an act to Provide for Certain persons engaged in the land and Navael survice of the united States in the Revolutionary war passed on the 18 day of March 1818 and that he has not nor has any person in trust for him any Property or Securities Contracts of Debts Due to him and that he has no income other than what is contained in the Schedule hereto annexed and by his subscribed towit, “No property at all

    He further states that he is a cooper by occupation but from old age and an almost total defect in his vision he is now holly unable to follow said occupation that he has not Children living with him but that he resides with one of his Children and subsists by his Charity He also states that he is in such indigent circumstances as to be unable to support Himself without the assistance of his County, he state that he has now wife living with him she being dead

    Israel Meadows (pension application W8451) and Alexander Reid (S36872) deposed that they knew that Peter Allumbaugh served as he claimed.]

    NOTE: Mathew Arbuckle’s company was raised in Botetourt County VA in Nov 1776 to go to Fort Randolph at present Point Pleasant WV in the 12 Virginia Regiment commanded by Col. James Wood and Lt. Col. John Neville.
