Paul was born of evangelical parents but joined the Jesuits in 1597. Originally a goldsmith he became a mathematician after his conversion to Romanism. Was professor of mathematics at Vienna and Gratz. Wrote a number of books in Latin. The book Annals of Oley Valley mentions other, probably related, Guldin's in St. Gall and Berne as Melchior Guldin Jr., born in 1571, and town clerk of St. Gall in 1604., and his father Melchior Guldin, born in St. Gall in 1529, guildmaster in 1580, senator in 1583, and died in 1626.
