Angels: History of the 11th Airborne Division, 1943-1946 by Edward M Flanagan Infantry Journal Press, Washington, D. C. January 1, 1948 ======================================= Reprint: The Angels: a history of the 11th Airborne Division, 1943-1946. Author: E M Flanagan. Publisher: Nashville, Tenn. : Battery Press, 1988. Series: Airborne series, 20th =================FREE FULL TEXT ON HATHITRUST Sgt. Berardi is specifically mentioned on page 116 and page 169. Once on the hill, A Company sent a patrol along the saddle to the east to establish contact with Ciceri Task Force. En route, the patrol met with heavy resistance, and several of the members were wounded. Sergeant Pat Berardi of A Company took two men from the company and started down the saddle to the assistance of the patrol. Halfway to the patrol, Japanese snipers opened fire, wounding Sergeant Berardi and killing the two men with him. Berardi rushed the thicket hiding the snipers, attacked and killed them with hand grenades and his rifle. He then moved to the isolated patrol, assumed command, and supervised evacuation of the wounded men of the patrol. He then, and only then, permitted himself to be carried to the rear where he died of his wounds. For his heroism, Sergeant Berardi was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross.-------------------------Appendix I: Decorations and Awards...Distinguished Service Cross...Sgt Pat Berardi, 511 PIR *PUBLIC DOMAIN * https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015049795266&view=1up&seq=11
