Born into a socially and politically well-connected family, Oswald M. Frewen's first cousins included Sir Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill and Sir Shane Leslie.
A career Royal Navy officer, during World War One Frewen was present at every major Naval engagement in the North Sea. After retiring from the Navy in 1924 as a Commander, he embarked on a career in law. With the oubreak of World War Two, however, he returned to active service in the Royal Navy and by the end of the war retired with the rank of Captain.
His autobigraphy, Sailor's Solioquy, was posthumously published in 1961. His papers are held by the British Library. Find a Grave
