    Case 18581 "Oliver Reed 1829".

    9 Feb 1829: Petition of "Nathan O. Reed and Mary E. Reed Children of Oliver Reed of Bedford" representing "that the said Oliver Reed is non-compos, and incapable to take care of himself"
    10 Feb 1829: Selectmen of the town of Bedford directed to make inquisition thereof and give due & timely return.
    11 Feb 1829: William Webber, Reuben Baron, Amos Hartwell, Selectmen of Bedford, do adjudge Oliver Reed is a non compos mentis person and recommend Capt Joel Fitch as a suitable person.
    3 Mar 1829: Bond of Joel Fitch of Bedford as guardian of "Oliver Reed of said Bedford yeoman who is a non compos mentis person & incapable of taking care of himself".
    17 Apr 1829: inventory taken pursuant to order of 16 Mar 1829.
    9 Feb 1830: Petition to sell real estate to cover debts approved.
    11 Feb 1833: Petition of Oliver Reed to cease guardianship. Reuben Baron and Timothy Page, Selectmen of Bedford, believe he is "now of sound mind" and it should be approved. Consent of Joel Fitch appended. Approved 12 Feb 1833.

  4. Source:Reed, Jacob Whittemore. History of the Reed Family in Europe and America, p. 143, suggests that the Oliver who married Mary Fitch is the son of the Oliver who married Betsey Abbott. But it appears it was the same Oliver Reed. This is supported by the following observations:
    1) death of Mary Fitch in 1812 calls her the second wife of Oliver
    2) there is no birth record of a son Oliver or any children to Oliver and Betsey
    3) Mary Fitch would have been about 8 years older than any possible son making their marriage unlikely
    4) there is no overlap or contradiction to this in all the dates
