Obadiah S. Preston was born about 1805 in Pennsylvania. He married 1st to Patience V. (unknown surname) and had two children with her, a girl and a boy. She died and about 1859 he married Mary L. Dewese in Ohio, with whom he had Violetta, Stephen, Isaac, and Thomas.

He is called in some records, "Reverend", though it's not yet clear which denomination he belonged to.

He's been found in the following censuses: 

    1840: Ohio, Washington county, Waterford township
    1850: Ohio, Washington county, Waterford township
    1860: Ohio, Washigton county, Waterford township
    1870: Wisconsin, Vernon county, Clinton township

and then in 1880 Mary, now called a widow, is found in Iowa, Adams county, Quincy township.
