  2. It is tempting to think this gravestone is the same person, but the evidence for any such conclusion is lacking, and the credibility of the memorial page is hurt by placing the birth in Connecticut. Even the census entries in Utica give his birthplace as Vermont (1880, line 10; 1875, line 31; 1870, line 34; 1865, line 7; 1860, line 5). The reason why such a birthplace isn't sufficient is because the 1850 census shows two Noble Hopkins, one in Bennington, age 23; and one in Wallingford, age 21. The Bennington age is a better match to the New York man. Could they be the same? Possibly since they are both listed as peddlers and perhaps the associated movement of that job caused him to get listed twice? But we can't tell that from this information.
Another "problem" with the memorial page is that it lists the parents as "William Hopkins & Mary/Martha Smith". This would require an earlier marriage for William before the marriage to Sarah Southworth. Neither marriage record has been found to confirm and/or refute this possibility, but since there is no birth record for Noble, it is not clear if there is any basis for those parents in the first place.
