Obituary[3] 1 Jun 1977 Nils A. Lennartson, 61, of Alexandria, Va., Bates College graduate and former Maine newsman, and public affairs official in government and industry, died unexpectedlly Tuesday morning at his home.
He was president of the Railway Progress Institute, an association of more than 200 suppliers of railroad equipment.
He made frequent visits to a home he and his wife, the former Emily E. Weston of Skowhegan, maintained at Falmouth Foreside.
Mr. Lennartson was born at Webster, Mass. on Aug, 1915. He was a graduage of Pembroke (N.H.) Academy and of Bates College, where he received his degree in 1936. He joined the Portland Press Herald as a reporter in 1937 and pursued that career until he was drafted into the Army in 1942. Commissioned a second lieutenant in 1943, he was assigned to duty in Brazil in the Air Transport Command. He finished the war as a first lieutenant.
Mr. Lennartson served as assistant publicity manager for the Maine Central Railroad from 1945-1947, then worked a year in public relations for the U.S. Steel Corporation. He went into government service in 1948, starting as deputy director for public relations in the newly-created Department of the Air Force. He held public affairs posts in the commerce and treasury departments.
From 1961 to 1965, when he retired from the government, he was deputy assistant secretary of defense for public affairs. He then began his work with the Railway Progress Institute.
He was commended by the Air Force and by the treasury department for the quality of his work.
One of his primary recreations, pursued with his wife, was raising and showing Dalmatians.
He belonged to the American Society of Association Executives, the Public Relations Society of America, the National Press Club, the Union League of Chicago and other organizations.
He is survived by his widow, whom he married in Jan. 27, 1943.

    Nils Lennartson Resigns Defense Department Post
    Nils A. Lennartson, a graduate of Bates College and a former Portland newspaperman, is resigning as deputy assistant secretary of defense for public affairs to become president of the railroad progress institute at Chicago.
    Lennartson was a reporter for the Portland Press Herald for a period of six years prior to World War II.
    An announcement Wednesday night said Lennartson's resignation is effective Saturday and that he is going to Chicago about the middle of this month.
    Lennartson, a native of Webster, Mass., but longtime resident of Maine, entered government service in 1948 as deputy director of information for the Commerce Department, then as assistant to the treasury secretary until 1961 when he returned to the Pentagon.
    Lennartson entered the Air Force as a private in 1942, leaving active duty at the end of World War II as a captain.

    WASHINGTON (AP) - The Kennedy Administration's secretary of defense-to-be, Robert S. McNamara, Tuesday named two long-time career government employees to Pentagon jobs.
    McNamara chose Nils A. Lennartson, 45, now assistant secretary of the treasury, to be deputy assistant secretary of defense for public affairs...
    Lennartson will serve as an assistant to Arthur Sylvester, who recently was designated by President-elect John F. Kennedy to be assistant secretary of defense of public affairs.
    Lennartson for six years was a reporter with the Gay Gannett Newspapers at Portland Maine, and spent several years in public relations work.
    He entered government service in 1948 as a public relation specialist for the Air Force. With the beginning of the Eisenhower Administration, Lennartson was director of information for the Department of Commerce. For the past three years he has been chief of public information for the Treasury Department.
    Lennartson's wife is the former Emily Weston of Skowhegan, Maine.
