4. NICHOLAS4 LAFON (FRANCIS3, JAMES2, RENE1) was born Abt. 1720 in France, and died 1749 in Tappahannok Township, Essex Co. VA. He married ELIZABETH STHRESHLEY Abt. 1737 in Essex Co. VA Book: D 42, Page: 97, daughter of THOMAS STHRESHLEY and HANNAH. She was born 1719 in Essex Co. VA, and died in Essex Co. VA.
Notes for NICHOLAS LAFON:
November 2, 1803, William Sthreshley, of the first part, Lucy Sthreshley, his wife, of the second part, and Thomas Sthreshley, Daniel Preston and Nicholas Lafon, of the third part. The parties of the third part are herewith appointed and declared Trustees for the party of the first part and second part in order to carry this deed into effect. The following tract of 980 acres in Essex County, Virginia, and the negro slaves, Charles, Ishmael, Tom, Lewis, John, Samuel, George, Ambrose, Charles and Albert, Andrew, Tom. Jr., Edmond, Betty, Caty, Roses, Ursula, Celia, Rachael, Agga, Isham, have been lent to Lucy Sthreshley, party of the second part, by her former husband, for and during her life and to her use, and to enable her to maintain and educate her children by her said former husband, and in order to make full and ample provision for Lucy, now the wife of William Sthreshley, and in consideration of all that part of the profits of the said land and negro slaves heretofore received by William and applied to his own use, viz., the sum of 300 pounds and of which he is acquitted and hereby released forever, and for and in consideration of the right of dower which Lucy may have in any lands of the said William, which Lucy relinquishes and will relinquish when required, he, the said William has granted and confirmed by these presents to the parties of the third part all the right, title, property and interest of the said William, in and to the aforesaid land and negroes, and also two other negro men slaves, William and Elliott, and all the stock of furniture and farming utensils of the said William, as trustees for the sole and separate use and maintenance of Lucy and her children. William reserves to himself the sum of 10 pounds annually, to be paid out of the profits of the estate herein conveyed by the said trustees at the end of each year, with all the residue of the said profits to be paid to Lucy at the end of each year. The Lafon family were French Huguenots. It is family tradition that LaRochelle was their home in France.
The earliest Lafon record found was the inventory of the estate of Nicholas Lafon in 1750 in Essex County, Virginia. (Torrence Wills and Administrators 1632-1800.) He must have died in or before 1750. The land tax records of King and Queen County, which adjoins Essex Co. on the south, show that Thomas Lafon, and Francis Lafon (under age) lived in King and Queen Co. in 1782 and 1783. The records also show that Wm. and Francis Lafon sold 417 acres in King and Queen Co. 1787-1792.
