The will of Nicholas Kellogg was dated 1558 and is in D/ABW 22/79. "Wills at Chelmsford"
Will of Nicholas Kellogg and a copy of the Will of his father-in-law, William Hall, from the ERO. Nicholas' will is short and was written during the reign of Philip and Mary (Bloody Mary). He commends his soul to God and wills all his property to his wife, Florence ("Flowerence") with the instruction that she distribute it to his children after her decease "as she shall think good". She is appointed executrix. Philip Bird and Thomas Kellog are witnesses. William Hall directs that he be buried in the churchyard at Debden and bequeaths 12 pence to the high alter there along with other bequests to the church. He bequeaths "two bestes to the holy rode to kype myn obit perpetrall". The residue of his estate is bequeathed to his wife, "Florans" and his brother, John Byeston "...that they ordene and dispose for the well of my sowle as best can be founde by ther discrecions." William Mason, Thomas Hockley and Nicholas Kylogg are witnesses, "and Hector Hanesett my seall".
NICHOLAS, the first Kellogg whose name is found in the public records of England, was born about 1488, as is shown in his deposition in 1548; (page 10); .. He was buried in Debden, 17 May, 1558.
