Obituary

Jamestown NY Evening Journal, 12 Feb 1883: "The death of Nicholas Jacobs occurred at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr. W. E. Burtis in Jamestown, Sunday, February 11th. Deceased was aged 86 years, 10 months and 23 days. His death was painless and was from causes attendant upon old age. He has been in excellent health this winter, and his death was a surprise to the members of his family.

"Nicholas Jacobs was born in Albany county, N. Y. He was a soldier in the war of 1812. He came to Chautauqua county when he was twenty-one years of age and settled on the farm two miles north-west of Jamestown, now occupied by Willis Price, when it was a forest. There was but one frame dwelling in Jamestown at that time. The price paid for his land was $2.50 per acre. Mr. Jacobs continued to live on his farm continuously until he moved into Jamestown about six years ago. He was married May 17th, 1832, to Sophia Wheeler who, with their daughters, Mrs. W. E. Burtis, Mrs. Willis Price and Miss Eliza Jacobs, survive him.

The funeral will take place from the residence of Mr. W. E. Burtis, corner of Sixth and Pine streets, Tuesday at 2 o'clock p.m., the remains to be interred in Lake View cemetery. Rev. H. L. Hubbell of the Congregational church will conduct the services."
