About Nicholas Casiah/Cashie
- Tuscarora Indian tribal tradition says "Cashia" was originally Chief of Tandequemuc, a village located along the banks of the river which early North Carolina settlers called "Kesiah" or "Cashia" as early as 1668, later named the "Cashie River" in early Bertie County, North Carolina, which may have been named after the family of Chief Cashie. It is estimated that he was born about 1690. He was of the Deer Clan. The Historian of the Southern Band Tuscarora Indian Tribe says, "The Southern Band Tuscarora Tribe has in its possesion original documents which date back to the 1700's, and the genealogies of each of the 200+ members who have proven descent from one of the families who were tribal members in that era. The Cashie (Cashia) family is one of those families. Chief Cashie was one of the main Chiefs our Tribal members descend from".
