Grandma used to tell me about how she worked at the Canteen, "Free Servicemen's Canteen, 1942-1946" Representative of the patriotic spirit of the homefront during World War II, the Big Four Route Veterans Association Women's Auxiliary No. 3 operated a free canteen service for troops in a small white building on the platform of the New York Central Railroad. Staffed and funded entirely by volunteers, donations came from ten counties. The 170 volunteer ladies met servicemen with welcoming words, thousands of sandwiches, desserts, fruits, drinks, and cigarettes, despite federal government rationing restrictions. Approximately 702,779 soldiers, sailors, and marines were fed on their trips to and from the European and Pacific theaters of war. This was one of the few known canteens known to serve all nationalities and races. Margaret Clingerman, who started the canteen, influenced the establishment of six other canteens in Ohio.

Granny's Diary

'Twas in the year of 1861 The Springtime work had just begun When Lincoln called for Volunteers Regardless of their health or years. My Grandpa dropped his rake and hoe And said, It's time for me to go" He left three ch8ildren and my granny In a log cabin with Aunt Fanny. Poverty and want was granny's share The children helped her load to bear She picked up grandpa's rake and hoe And in that garden she did go "Give us this day our daily bread" Was the prayer my grany always said. She wove hte cloth and carded the whool To make her children clothes for school She set torches made of hickory bark To scare the wolf pack aftr dark She dipped her candles, baked her bread From His bounty, her children fed. Now, my grandpa joined with Co K And went all through the war, they say. On January first, 1863 Lincoln's proclamation, the laves did free The terrible fighting through those years Brought hunger, hardships and bitter tears In April '65 the war was won. Grandpa came home with sword and gun This is the tale as was told to me It's been handed down through my family. I have grandpa's sword and gun And a Confederate note, date '61 In Logan county, the cabin stands Repaired and revamped by loving hands April '76 grandpa pased away May he rest in peace 'till the judgement day.

Nellie's father was David Orlando Deardorff 1855-1930 and her Grandfather was John Rosebrook Deardorff 1832-1911. John served in Co K 121 Inf. Reg. Aug 1862 - Feb 1863.

I tal to my Lord evry morning, we walk side by side through the day. In wisdom and strengh He does guide me Lest my faltering steps lose the way. Yes, I talk to my Jesus each morning He holds my hand through the day He has promised us all life eternal If only we trust and obey, trust and obey. For there's no other way to be happy in Jesus But to trust and obey.

Seek help from the Lord in the morning Fill your soul with His power from above You will find that your cup runneth over With mercy from faith in His lver. I talk to my Lord in the morning To ask Him for His care through the day He has promised to bear all my trouble My Jeses has planned it that way. Now I close my eyes and softly say my childhood prayer I softly pray the Lord my soul to keep And should I die before I wake, I ask dear Jeses my soul to take.
