- ↑ Source:Goddard, Clark LaMotte. Goddard Genealogy in England and America, p. 16-17, says Nathaniel's first wife was "Mary Cooper" and second wife was "Sarah C. Winchester". Source: Harms, John Wike. Goddard Book, Vol. 2, p. 1085, gives his first wife ("in 1763") as "Mary Winchester" and second wife ("in 1763") Sarah C. Winchester of Concord b. 1743, d. 18 Apr 1833. This last source cites Source:Goddard, Charles Austin. Samuel Goddard Families, p. 2, which traces Nathaniel's brother Samuel's descendants. For Nathaniel, it names Mary Winchester as his first (and only) wife, and shows no second wife.
Meanwhile, actual records names the first wife as Mary Winchester, who d. in Athol 1767, and then as the second wife in Grafton in 1768, Sarah Flagg. She is the widow of Eleazer Flagg and her maiden name was Sarah Chandler, born in late 1742 in Concord, where she m. 1763 Eleazer Flagg of Grafton, who died in Grafton in 1767 (all this found in the records). Mary Cooper is apparently an error with Nathaniel's uncle Nathaniel, who m. 1723 Mary Cooper. No record of a Sarah Winchester b. in 1743 is found, nor a marriage record showing her marrying Nathaniel Goddard, and she is apparently the result of confusion with the name of the first wife and the actual second wife.
