    Son of Philip and Charity(Bates)Swarthout, listed 6 children including Nathan's brother Hamilton, George W., and Harley Swarthout.

    Enlisted in the Mormon Battalion and was
    mustered out in the fall of 1847 in Los Angeles. Later Swarthout went north to Sutters Fort and was one of the first to mine gold on the American River.
