Spotsylvania County Court- 3rd of April, 1739: On the petition of JOHN WORD to have NATHAN CHILES, a poor orphan, son of JUSTICE CHILES, bound to him, the said child being parentless, & the said WORD being his Godfather, & it is ordered that the Church Wardens of this Parish bind the said child to the said WORD, the said WORD is to learn him the trades of Shoemaker, Tanner, and Saddler & to give him Schooling as the Law directs, the said Child to be bound to him until he come of age. .
Spotsylvania County Court-1st of May 1739: On Petition of GEORGE WILCOCK to have a former order of the Court obtained by the false assertions of JOHN WORD in order to have NATHAN CHILES, an Orphan, the Son of JUSTICE CHILES, bound to him rejected, and the Court having heard the said partys & are of the opinion that the said WORD is an unfit person to bring the said Orphan, it is therefore considered that the said former order to be reversed and that the said NATHAN CHILES be bound to the said WILCOCK by the Church Wardens of this Parish until he come of age & the said WILCOCK to learn him the Trade of Carpenter & to give him Schooling as the Law directs.
