Nanny Tyzzer was born in 1841 at Perranzabuloe in Cornwall, daughter of Elizabeth Tyzzer, formerly Mitchell, and her husband Robert Tyzzer, a lead miner. Nanny appears in the 1851 census living with her parents and siblings at Hendra in Perranzabuloe. By 1861 she was working as a servant at Idless in the parish of Kenwyn.
On 25th March 1868, aged 26, Nanny married a gamekeeper called Josiah Cox. They married at St Mellion, at the eastern end of Cornwall, and at the time of their marriage both were living at Newton Ferrers, a big estate in the parish of St Mellion.
After their marriage, Nanny and Josiah moved around extensively. They had a daughter, Elizabeth, in 1870 at Tetcott in Devon. By 1871 they were living at Middle Lodge on the Maritstow estate in the parish of Tamerton Foliot in Devon. They had another daughter, Kate, at Tamerton Foliot in 1872.
By 1873 they had moved to Clowance Mill in the parish of Crowan in western Cornwall. They had a son called John baptised at Crowan in August 1873, but sadly he died the following month.
By 1880 they had returned to the area where they had married, living at Hornifast in the parish of Pillaton, just south of St Mellion. They had a daughter called Lucy late in 1880, but she too died as a baby, being buried at St Mellion in January 1881. The census later that year finds them at Hornifast with their two surviving daughters. Ten years later they were in the same area, living in the neighbouring hamlet of Pentillie Quay, on the banks of the River Tamar.
By 1901 they had moved again, returning to Tamerton Foliot where they had lived in the early 1870s, living at Welltown Cottage there.
By 1908 they had returned to Cornwall, living at Hambland, a hamlet on the hills above the coast in the parish of Tywardreath, between Fowey and Par. Nanny died at the age of 66, and was buried at Tywardreath on 5th January 1908. Josiah survived her by four years.
