Obituary: In Sheffield, March 12, 1879, Mrs. Thomas Farnsworth, aged 83 years. The deceased was grand mother to Mrs. L. P. Hall of this place. The deceased was the widow of Thomas Farnsworth, who died thirty-six years ago. In early life she was a resident of Cherry Grove township when that town was a denser wilderness than it is now. During her first settlement in the woods she killed a bear. It had been killing the sheep and hogs and one day it was coming down a tree near the home and Mrs. Farnsworth met him as he was making a landing and broke his back with a piece of rail. The man who was with her ran away for a gun; but before he returned she had the brute at her feet. It was her habit then, when there were no neighbors within fifteen miles, to go on horseback to Balltown to nurse the sick and back the next day to look after her own affairs. Her life was devoted to doing good deeds, and she lived to see the fourth generation of her children. She was ill but a few days, and was the oldest person in that section of the country. References
