Nancy (Ford) Smith, applied for a widow's pension for Larkin Smith’s service in the War of 1812. The "Widow's Brief" in the pension file indicates that Larkin Smith served as a Private in Ensign W. Clarke's Regiment of the Kentucky Militia in the War of 1812. He enlisted at Falmouth, KY on 18 Feb 1814 and was discharged on 18 May 1814.

At the time Nancy Smith applied for her husband's pension on 11 Aug 1879, she listed her post office as DeMossville, Kentucky. She stated that her husband's description at the time of his enlistment was: about six feet high, dark gray eyes, and black hair. She also stated that Larkin Smith had been previously married to Cynthia Dougherty, but after her death, he married Nancy Ford. She also gives her age on 17 Jul 1879 as 79 years of age, which places her birth sometime in 1800 or 1801.
