Source:Pope, Charles Henry. Cheney Genealogy, p. p. 268, identifies this Moses Cheney as the man who married 1782 Lucy Dexter and lived in Orange. This would imply that the age at death found on his gravestone is six years off. The 1830 census reports his age as 70 to 80, so born before 1760. This would imply that he married at 18 and bought property in 1781 4 years before he was of legal age. All these facts consistently argue that Moses was born about 1759, and suggest Pope is wrong. Of course pope's identification is repeated in many other secondary sources.

Source:Warden, William A. Genealogy of the Dexter Family in America, p. 86 says Lucy's husband was born in Newton 28 Feb 1759. This date meshes better with the other things known about Lucy's husband. Note: No primary record found. Therefore, it is not known if this is valid, or an error, and no clue is given as to his parents. Clearly they cannot be the parents indicated by Pope because their son Moses was born in 1764.

There is a Moses Cheney of Newbury b. 9 Jan 1759, but he appears to have stayed in Newbury, and the names of Moses and Lucy's children don't suggest he is the right person either. (Note that Pope's coverage (p. 291) says this Moses died 20 Dec 1839, but the probate file (Essex Probate 5289) says "Moses Cheney late of said Newbury Fisherman who was a revolutionary pensioner of the United States, died at said Newbury on the twentieth day of December one thousand eight hundred and thirty nine ... left no widow - that he left only one child your petitioner [Moses Cheney] who is his only heir [sic] at law." If this petition is correct, Pope is wrong about who died on 1839, since the Moses b. 1759 is indicated (and appears) to have multiple children alive at the time of his death. This suggests Pope was confused about all the Moses Cheneys.)
