The Sallie DeWitt 1981 Genealogy states that Montie's mother, E.A.E. (Simpson) Vest, died five weeks after his birth. His older sister Claudia cared for him until he was 3 1/2 years old, when she eloped and married Lee DeWitt. Montie was called 'Pod' by his family, and he was a farmer and a cattleman. His father, 'Pa Dick' lived with him in Cecil, Arkansas after 1931, when he moved from Clovis, New Mexico, after the death of his daughter Elizabeth, until Pa Dick died in 1936.

The Sallie DeWitt 1981 Genealogy states that he died of bone cancer. It also states he died of a heart attack.
