Mrs. Geo. W. Wear Is Laid to Rest in Local Cemetery - Pioneer Woman Came to Halstead Region in '80's; Was Native of Brandenburg, Ky. - Funeral services for the late Mrs. George W. Wear, who passed away in Wichita on Thursday of last week, were held from the Culbertson mortuary in Wichita at 10:00 a.m., March 23. Rev. Gerald Weary, pastor of the First Unitarian church of Wichita, officiated, and Mrs. Lillian A. Garnett sang "Abide With Me," "Their Silent Ministry" and "Whispering Hope."
Services were also conducted by Rev. Weary at the Halstead Methodist church at 2:30 p.m. the same day. A quartet composed of Miss Avis Miller, Mrs. Ed Gilbert, Clancy Brown and Walter Detweiler sang, "Abide With Me" and "Their Silent Ministry," and Miss Miller sang "Whispering Hope." Mrs. L. P. Krehbiel accompanied on the organ.
Burial was in the Halstead cemetery and pallbearers were Ralph Williamson, Homer Popkins, Sigel McDaniel, Ed Ray, Jim McClellan and George Wherritt.
Pearl Barnes, daughter of A. L. and Inez Barnes, was born at Brandenburg, Ky., July 11, 1881, and departed this life at her home March 21, 1940, at 10:30 a.m. at the age of 58 years, 8 months, 10 days.
At the age of 4 years she moved with her parents to Kansas where they located on a farm near Patterson.
On Nov. 12, 1899, she was united in marriage to George W. Wear of Halstead. To this union were born two children, a daughter and a son. She resided with her husband and children on the Wear homestead southwest of Halstead for twenty-two years. In the spring of 1920 they moved to suburban farm west of Wichita, later moving to Wichita, where she resided the past seventeen years.
She was a kind and affectionate wife and a loving mother. Her greatest pleasure was inkeeping a cheerful home and providing for the comforts of others. Even during the final weeks of her long illness, the welfare of others was her greatest concern.
She leaves to mourn her death her husband, George W. Wear, of Wichita, a daughter, Mrs. Hazelle Gwinn, of Wichita, a son, Orville W. Wear, of Canton, four grandchildren, Norman and Gordon Gwinn, of Wichita, and Lois and Maurice Dean Wear, of Canton. Two sisters, Mrs. Estelle Hudson, of Wichita and Mrs. Hallie Back of Billings, Okla., four brothers, Cecil and Elza Barnes, of Mt. Hope, Frank Barnes of Wichita and Charles Barnes of Mound Valley, a number of other relatives and a host of friends. A sister, Flora, and a brother, Edwin, preceded her in death.
