Great was the measure of grief which feel on Franklinton and throughout this section when the news spread Saturday afternoon that Mr. Milton J. Magee, more affectionately known as "Uncle Mitt," had succumbed at 3:00 o'clock P.M. Saturday, March 25, at the age of 65 years. Intimate friends realized that his health had been impaired for more than a year, yet the genial druggist refused to cast aside his life-work, and he passed on, as it were, working almost up to the time of his passing. Mr. Magee had been confined to the house for the past several days, but his condition was not thought serious up until a few hours before his death. Everything possible was done, but the spirit of "Uncle Mitt" wafted its way to the great beyond. He passed peacefully, or in the words of a poet, "Sustained and soothed by an unfaltering trust, he wrapped the drapery of his couch around him, and lay down to pleasant dreams." Mr. Magee's devotion to his profession, to his friends, and to his home were characteristic of his life in this community. His home life was beautiful, and the love for his wife and children worth emulation. He did a vast amount of charity work among the poorer people of this community, and the high esteem in which "Uncle Mitt" was held is truly typical of his influence among the citizenry where he had lived his life. Deceased was a scion of a distinguished family whose connections scattered all over Mississippi and Louisiana. Among his immediate family surviving, besides his wife, Mrs. Lydia Wilson Magee, are two children of a former marriage, William E. Magee, who was in business with his father and who continues the management of the Ideal Drug Store, and Mrs. R. E. Richardson of Bogalusa; one grandson, Harry Richardson, of Bogalusa; two sisters, Mrs. J. J. Green of Enon and Mrs. T. M. Babington of Franklinton; one half sister, Mrs. D. C. Bickham, and one half brother, W. E. Magee, both of Franklinton. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church, of which he was a life member, at three o'clock Sunday afternoon in the presence of a large gathering of friends which filled the building and overflowed into the street below. During the hours that preceded the services, scores called at the home to pay their respects and to look for the last time upon the features of one who in life had meant so much to them.
