Michael Pinkley and Elizabeth Reel Pinkley and family appear on the 1790, 1800 and 1810 Burke Co., NC census. It is still unclear as to the reason the family moved to Barren Co., KY before the 1820 census was enumerated. It is also thought that Michael Pinkley was also of German heritage, not English. The original spelling of the name Pinkley may have been Binkley. The German pronunciation of B sounds like P and German names were anglacized as to how it sounded to the English court clerks ear. In early Frederick Co., MD records you find several German families whose last name of Binkley is interchangeably spelled Pinkley
