Enlisted in the Confederate Army on May 29, 1861 in Wytheville, Virginia. Was listed as AWOL on December 12, 1861 and was captured near Washington on July 13, 1864. Was a POW at Elmira, New York and exchanged on March 14, 1865.

Michael fought in the Battle at Giles County Courthouse, the Battle of Lewisburg, the Battle of Charleston, the Battle of Blountville, the Battle at Cloyd's Mountain, the Battle of the Piedmont, the Battle of Monocacy Junction and the Battle of Fort Stevens where he was captured as a POW. He was captured on July 13, 1864 near Washington, D.C., the day after the Battle of Fort Stevens, in Northwest Washington, D.C. He was a POW in the Old Capitol Prison in Washington, D.C. on July 13, 1864 for ten days. He was then transferred as a POW to the Elmira, New York Confederate Prison for eight months.
His brother James Wiliam Burton was also in the same unit with him, as a Blacksmith. His brother William Russell Burton was also in the same unit. His brother Christopher was in the 8th VA Cavalry, Co H. His brother-in-law, George R. Hager was in the same unit.
Michael is named after his grandfather, Michael Stump, Sr. who was born in 1764 in Culpeper County, Virginia, and was an Indian Spy during the Revolutionary War in Tazewell County, Virginia.
Michael married Rachel Catherine Carbaugh on September 3, 1872 and they had 8 children: Sarah, Mary Ada "Mollie", Charles Edward, Elvira Alice, Samuel Lenzo, Jessie Rody, Sterling Bryant and Margaret Belle.
