Melba was a cheerleader, beauty , FFA Sweetheart, and won many high school awards at Haynesville High School. After graduation she attended LSU in Baton Rouge, LA but left to marry my father who was just home from WWII. They lived in Ruston. During my childhood she was a Brownie Troop Leader, Girl Scout Leader, Boy Scout Leader, and Sunday School teacher at Trinity Methodist Church. She worked at First National Bank, and for the City of Ruston where she was the Secretary and Office Manager for Ruston Parks and Recreation. Before she got ill she ran two miles every morning at the La.Tech Track and taught aerobics for the Park and Recreation two nights a week. She worked at her office until four days before she died. She saw to it that I had a good education from A. E.Phillips to LA Tech. She saw to it that I took dancing, piano, and joined Brownie and Girl Scouts . There is a athletic field named for her at the Ruston Baseball park. Now my grandson plays on this field during soccer and baseball.

Two years and one month before her death, Mother was diagnosed with inflammatory carcinoma of the breast. Many trips to Houston, Tx and several surgeries and chemotherapy could not save her, but she taught us all how to accept life's dissapointments. I never heard her complain during the two year ordeal. I still, many years later, miss her terribly. She was my best friend.
