Children of John Chamberlain and Margaret Gould: 7) Mehitable, b. 12 Nov 1721, m. as second wife, 1 May 1740, William Butterfield, s/o Jonathan Butterfield and Rachel Stone [sic, see comment], m. (2) 6 Jun 1770 Samuel Locke.
[Note: We accept Chamberlain's authority for the Chamberlains, but his work on the Butterfields could use some help. Chamberlain also says William's step-mother was Elizabeth Chamberlain. Thus, he has given William two different Jonathan's as a father, and neither one the correct one. The Jonathan who married as a second wife Elizabeth Chamberlain did not name a son William in his 1738 will, and the Jonathan who married Rachel Stone married in 1721, so would not be old enough to have a son who married in 1740, must less for the second time. In fact, the Jonathan who married Rachel Stone was William's brother. William's parents are proven by the probate of William's brother John, who died childless, and eventually the estate was distributed to William's children in right of their father William, John's brother.]
