    [May Burton Jr served as ensign in 1777 in Captain J. White's Company; as 2nd Lieut. in 1778 in Captain Benjamin Head's Company; as 1st Lieut. in Captain Robert Miller's Company in 1779 and was commissioned a Captain on May 15, 1780. By all accounts May Burton Sr was a wealthy man and May Burton Jr, who inherited much on his father's wealth, added greatly to his father's lands by the time he died in 1829.

    In 1811 May Jr gave bond as Sheriff of Orange County Virginia. He was also a lay reader of the Old Orange Episcopal Church for many year and was a member of the Court of Orange County.

    The Burton home was said to have been the first within a 20 mile radius to have glass windows and with a roof so high and pointed "that it would split a rain drop in two".]
