Maud Ethel Clifton was born in 1888 in Markyate, Hertfordshire. She was the daughter of Jane Clifton formerly Bandy and her husband Walter Clifton. Jane and Walter had married in October 1887, a few months before Maud's birth. Jane died soon after giving birth to Maud - Maud's birth and Jane's death were both registered in the January to March quarter of 1888. Jane was only 18 when she died. Maud was baptised at Markyate when she was about a year old, on 3rd March 1889.

Maud's father, Walter, remarried on Christmas Day 1889 to an Ellen Sinfield. Maud was not brought up by her father and stepmother. Instead, she went to live with her father's sister Elizabeth and Elizabeth's husband Abel Mann. Elizabeth and Abel appear not to have had any children together, although Elizabeth did have a daughter Alice from before her marriage. Maud appears living with her aunt Elizabeth in each census from 1891 to 1911, being decribed variously as daughter, niece and adopted daughter.
