Hill and Thomas Smith, representing their wives' respective shares in the estate of Matilda Ballard, dated December 21 and 25, 1827, respectively.

    A May 5, 1812 return of Thomas Grant, administrator de bonis non of the Estate of James Ballard, deceased, includes a payment, dated July 7, 1806, for "midwife fees" suggesting Matilda Ballard may have been born just prior or after the death of James Ballard.

Payments reflected in these returns made on behalf of Matilda Ballard include payments to her mother for her maintenance. The April 1813 return also reflects that the payment of letters of guardianship by Robert Chivers made on January 8, 1808

    Minutes of Wilkes County Inferior Court, 1811-1817, at pages 45-46, reflect that on April 5, 1813, Robert Chivers guardian of Lucy, Sophia and Matilda Ballard, orphans of James Ballard, deceased, resigned his guardianship, whereupon Lucy choose Daniel Owens to be her guardian and he was appointed by the court as guardian for for Sophia and Matilda, as well.
