    [Note: Barbour appears to have misinterpreted the year of Matthew's birth, reading 1760 as 1750. Such a date would not fit in the family of Stephen and Hannah so he changed it to Nathan and Sarah. This is before the marriage of Nathan and Sarah, so this appears ill-considered.]

    II. Sarah Whitney ... married ... her second cousin, Matthew Olmstead, born in Ridgefield 7 March 1760, a farmer and wall-builder, son of Stephen and Hannah (Northrop) Olmstead, of Ridgefield,  ; and grandson of one of the original proprietors of the town, Richard Olmstead, whose sister Elizabeth married Henry Whitney, grandfather of Sarah Whitney.

    They settled at Ridgefield, and there died (she, 23 May 1821  ; he, 16 Feb. 1847, and were buried in Titicus Cemetery.

    He was a soldier in several campaigns during the Revolutionary War, having entered the service when sixteen years old. He was in the army which was driven out of New York by the British, and was on guard at the execution of Major Andre.
