    Mastain Stephens Ussery is the son of Samuel Ussery and his wife Nancy Mary Stokes Hurt. I may have additional information on Mastain. I have recently moved and don't have all of my files unpacked yet. I'll be happy to answer any questions I can.

    1. Mastain Stephens1 Ussery Sr. (1883) was born on Dec 15, 1803 Lunenburg County, Virginia. His marriage license shows him to be born in Mississippi. He married Evaline Latting (32855) on Mar 5, 1829 performed by Richard Latting, J.P., Chicot County, Arkansas. He and Evaline Latting (32855) were divorced in Mar, 1831 San Augustine, Texas. He married Lucinda Magby Turner (1885), daughter of Elisha Turner (49687) and (Unknown) (--?--) (49688), on Feb 15, 1838 performed by R. W. Caldwell, J. P., San Augustine County, Republic of Texas. He married Olivia J. (Unknown) (1884) circa 1872 Hunt County, Texas. He died on Oct 6, 1876 killed when a horse fell on him, Poetry, Kaufman County, Texas, at age 72. Mastain had gone to visit one of his daughters and on his way back home, his horse slipped and fell on him, killing him. He was buried after Oct 6, 1876 Campground Cemetery, Terrell, Kaufman County, Texas.
    He was enlisted with his brother Meriweather in the Texas Army circa 1836 Texas Mastain and his brother Meriweather enlisted in the Texas Army during the War of Independence against Mexico, sometime after the fall of the Alamo in 1836. They were in Captain David Brown's Company.
    Mastain received land grants of more than 9,000 acres, the family moved to San Augustine County, Texas and in 1852, moved to Turner's Point, Kaufman County, Texas..
    He is found in the census of Sep 26, 1860 on page # 327-A; line 8, Turner's Point Post Office ( Kaufman County, Texas);, Hunt County, Texas; The census shows he owns real estate valued at $1,500.00 and has a personal estate valued at $4,675.00..
    About September of 1876, it was necessary to change the name of Turner's Point as another Post Office was using the same name. Mastain Stevens Ussery, Sr. changed the name of the town to Poetry.
