Mary Worsell was born about 1827, the sixth child of agricultural labourer William Worsell (aka Worsfold) and Sarah Morley. She was baptised on 29 July 1827 at St. Mary the Virgin's Church in Horne, Surrey. In 1841 she was living at "Bentley" in the area of Nutfield, Surrey with her parents and five of her siblings. In all, Mary had 10 siblings, who grew up to become or marry agricultural labourers, bricklayers, blacksmiths, carpenters and general labourers.

Mary was 20 when she married 22 year-old George Stringer, son of agricultural labourer John Stringer and Ann Price/Rice, at St. Nicholas Church on the 14th of April 1844. Witnesses to the marriage were John and Mary Stringer, probably George's father and stepmother.

George and Mary had at least 10 children, all born in the Worth/Crawley Down/Turner's Hill area and baptised at All Saints' Church in Crawley Down. Their first two children James (b. 1845) and Elizabeth (b. 1846) died in their infancy. Elizabeth died of convulsions at just 3 months old. Their third child Jane was born on 4 April 1847, followed by Richard in 1850. In the 1851 census George, Mary, Jane and Richard were living in Turners Hill Village with George's nephew John Stringer and a lodger named William Bridger. Like many men in the area, George worked as an agricultural labourer.

Four more children were born to the couple before the 1861 census: George in 1852, Emily in 1854, Penelope Anne Sarah in 1857 and John Thomas in 1860. In 1861 the family were still living in a cottage in Turner's Hill with George's nephew John Stringer but daughter Jane Stringer was visiting at the home of Sarah Humphrey. The Stringer family must have known the Gorringe family by at least 1861, when Jane Stringer's future husband James Gorringe was working as a servant to a grocer and draperer in Worth. It is not yet known whether they moved to London together or at different times, but in 1865 18 year-old Jane married 22 year-old James at St. Stephen's Church in Paddington.

Mary died on Christmas day the same year. She was only 38 and died from "gastric fever" with George by her side. She was buried at All Saints Church Cemetery, Crawley Down. George never remarried and died in Worth in 1882 with daughter Penelope at his side. Their children went on to become builder's labourers, housekeepers, bricklayers and agricultural labourers, and have many children of their own.
