8/4/2010: Dorothy Gibson Crane told Eric Fleshood that her Grandma Gibson had a darker complexion and high cheek bones--features that made it believable that she was Indian. However, she also said that the story that she was part Indian didn't quite satisfy because it didn't explain why Dr. Darian Smith would marry an Indian. Grandma Gibson (Mary F.) also said that her father disowned her when she decided to Mary John W. Gibson because he was a "hobo." Dorothy says she remembers Grandma and Grandpa Gibson coming back from a funeral in North Carolina and she ordered an oyster dish. She didn't eat it all and wanted to take the leftovers home--she referred to the leftovers as "draps." Could this be a word unique to the slave community? Dorothy also says she remembers that her grandmother ate a healthy diet--she liked to crumble cornbread into the drippings or broth of vegetables she would make. She says that Mary was a very religious woman and really believed in keeping the Sabbath holy.
