Mary Slater was baptised on 18th September 1795 at Stamford in Lincolnshire, daughter of a wheelwright called Joseph Slater and his wife Elizabeth. Mary was baptised in the parish of All Saints in Stamford. By the time her sister Ann was baptised in 1797 the family had moved to the parish of St Martin, Stamford Baron, being the part of Stamford south of the River Welland, which at that time was in Northamptonshire. Mary would later sometimes give her place of birth as St Martin's.
Mary later returned to live in the parish of All Saints in Stamford, where she was married on 8th May 1817, aged 21, to a gardener called Charles Newborn. He was from the village of Barnack, a couple of miles south-east of Stamford. After their marriage they settled in Barnack, having nine children baptised there between 1818 and 1838, although one died young.
Each census from 1841 to 1861 finds Mary and Charles living in Barnack. Charles died in 1866, aged 73. After his death, Mary lived with her son Owen and his family in Barnack.
Mary died on 10th March 1879 at Barnack, aged 83.
