▼Facts and Events
Fannie suffered from mental illness caused by a beating she recieved as a child from her school teacher H.M. Weaver for crocheting past recess. For this infraction she recieved over 100 lashes from a rod the size of a finger. Later Mr. Weaver got what was coming to him when he was walking around the streets of Gadsden, AL crazy himself. In between bouts of mental illness as an adult she worked for Davis Hosiery Mill in Fort Payne, AL. She enjoyed the work and Mr. Davis thought she was a good worker and when she would get over a bout of mental illness he would hire her back. She enjoyed photography and made many pictures of members of her family and gave them to the family who otherwise would not have been able to afford such a luxury. Fannie was married to Bob Mitchell who abandoned her after a few years because of her mental illness. Fannie spent at least the last decade of her life in Bryce Mental Hospital in Tuscaloosa, AL and spent periods of time there throughout her adult life. She would have periods of time where she would be well enough to live with her family, but her mental illness always returned. Courtesy of Sheila Treadaway ▼Image Gallery
