Mary Proctor was born around 1816 at Eaton Bray in Bedfordshire. There seems to have been more than one Mary Proctor baptised there around that time, making it difficult to identify her childhood family with confidence.
On 30th January 1836 Mary married Richard Kempson, a straw dealer, at Totternhoe. They appear to have had eight children together between 1838 and 1859. The 1841 census finds them living in Totternhoe, where their first two children were born. In the early 1840s they moved to Mary's native parish of Eaton Bray, where the rest of their children were born. Each census from 1851 to 1871 finds the family living at Eaton Bray. Mary was described as a straw sorter in 1861 and a plaiter in 1871.
Mary died shortly after the 1871 census. She was said to be 55 years old. Richard survived her by about fifteen years.
