BIOGRAPHY: Excerpt from two letters by Byron Jordan to E.B. Jordan of 2 Aug 1911 & 12 Jan 1913 respectively, that relates to his 2nd wife Mary, whose name I rec'd from Susanne Burt [RIN-84] Danubio 7-21-2001, who is Rolland B. Jordan's Great Granddaughter. “Two weeks ago we (Edith, Wife & I - think I wrote that to you) went to visit Charles Waynes at Reynolds. Their cousins the Misses Sue and Anna Laura Scarce were visiting them from Mo. I called on Courvades Cliris Bahrauger [my interpretation of this long name, however the IL Statewide Marriage index shows the marriage of a Frederick/Fredrick Bahringar to a Rachael Vanmeter in Rock Island Co. on 7 Jul 1866, so the date is pretty well on the mark] and Bainard Vance while there. Mr Ash [apparently in Superior, WI] will remember the latter.. The former married my cousin Rachel Vanmeter [? On spelling] at the close of the war. She died some years ago and his daughter is keeping house for him. A week ago Mon. the Breckenridge girls (Wifes grand children came up from Peoria. Tue they went to Reynolds [IL] Thurs the Scarce girls, Anna Bell Breckenridge (the younger sister) with the 3 Wayne boys came up in an auto.” “Ma had quite a poorly spell last week following eating mince pie, and I think ther [sic] must have been something more, as she isn’t any more than well now.You know she would never tell me her age. I surmised from that, that she was older than your mother or I, but how much more I could not tell, until her son said in course of conversation with friends in the room (Christmas day) that he was 54 years old [correct, b. 1859]. There upon asking her [Mary Ann Pitney] the order in which her children were born said Jules [Julius] was the oldest, then I asked her how old she was when she was married, said 17 [correct, b. 1840], and Jules born a year or so afterward.” She is listed in the 1880 Fed. Census for Galva, Henry Co., IL, enumerated on 4 Jun 1880, age 40, Keeping House and her father was born in VA and mother in OH. She is listed in the 1900 Fed. Census for Galva Twp., Henry Co., IL, enumerated on 6 Jun 1900, age 60. She is listed in the 1910 Fed Census for Orion Village, Henry Co., IL, enumerated on 21 Apr 1910, age 6?, head of house. She is listed in the 1920 Fed. Census for Orion Village, Henry Co., IL, enumerated on 5 Feb 1920 as age 80, Head of house + had borders. Lived in the old Byron Jordan home according to W.A. 'Gus' Gustafson, as his Grandfather boarded there.
