Mary Jane Odell was born in 1876 at Luton in Bedfordshire, daughter of a straw plait sewer named Ann Odell. When Mary Jane was only a few months old her mother married a bricklayer named William John Linney, who thus became her stepfather, and was sometimes known as Mary Jane Linney through her childhood. It is possible that William was her real father too, but this is considered unlikely on the basis that when Mary Jane married in 1898 she gave her surname as Odell rather than Linney. Mary Jane appears in the 1881 census with her mother, brother and stepfather living at 47 Hitchin Road in Luton.

Some time between 1881 and 1891 Mary Jane's family left Luton and moved to London. Mary Jane herself has not been found in the 1891 census, so it is not known whether she moved with them or not. Her next sighting is in 1898 in Luton, when she married an iron moulder named Walter Charles Smith. They had five children together, although one died young. The 1901 census finds them living at 23 Back Street.

In 1905 Mary Jane's mother, Ann, came to live with her. By this time they were living at 44 Burr Street. Ann was now living apart from William Linney and had been living in London with Mary Jane's brother. Ann died suddenly whilst staying with Mary Jane, and Mary Jane gave evidence at the subsequent inquest.[5]

The 1911 census finds Mary Jane and her husband and children living at 44 Burr Street, where they occupied four rooms. She has yet to be traced after 1911.
