- ↑ The Pane-Joyce website identifies Mary as the daughter of Richard Nichols and Abigail Damon, who was born 30 Mar 1713. You would have to assume the age at death was misreported as 40 instead of 46, for that to be a good match. Pane-Joyce does, saying she was 45, citing Jacobus' Bulkeley Genealogy. However, that work, on p. 355, does not identify her parents, does not give an age at death, and says "born about 1718" which suggests he used 40 (actually "in her 40th y." which is what is found in Uxbridge VRs, should be age 39, so about 1719). So apparently Jacobus was the source of other information on that line, and the age at death of 45 was assumption. Richard Nichols d. 1732, and the one probate document dated after her the 1736 marriage, in 1746, only uses her given name, Mary. There are at least two Mary Nichols born in Reading that are better matches age-wise, and Mary does not name any children either Richard or Abigail.
One name that Mary does use, and then Joseph re-uses with his second wife after Mary dies, is Ebenezer. One of the two better matches is Mary, d/o Ebenezer Nichols, b. 20 Apr 1719. Checking Ebenezer's probate turns up the interesting fact that Joseph Damon was made administrator of Ebenezer's estate, until he died and a replacement was appointed. The division of the estate sets property off to "the Children of Deacon Joseph Damon, Grand Children to the said Ebenezer Nichols Deceased" [Middlesex Probate 15914] which provides a conclusive identification of the Mary Nichols who married Joseph Damon.
