Mary Nicholls was born on 19th May 1823 and baptised a couple of months later at Wheathampstead in Hertfordshire. She was the daughter of a straw plaiter called Hannah Nicholls, formerly Filby, and her husband, Daniel Nicholls, a labourer who had previously been a soldier in the militia. Mary was their second child, although their first child had died before Mary's birth.

Mary's father died when she was only six years old. Mary herself did not live to adulthood. She died aged 14 in July 1837 and was buried at Wheathampstead.
