Mary Weir Montgomery was the daughter of James and Margaret (Weir) Montgomery, and moved with them to Washington County, Tennessee in about 1781. A few years later the family moved to Blount County, Tennessee where she married James Cowan on 23 April 1800. In 1806 she moved with her husband to Franklin County, Tennessee, where he died in 1815 after serving in the War of 1812. He had the title of Capt. James Cowan. Before 1850 Mary moved with her children to DeSoto County, Mississippi, where she died. Her son, the Rev. Samuel Montgomery Cowan was a Cumberland Presbyterian Minister, and married Nancy Coker Clements. Her daughter, Elizabeth Dougherty Cowan married William H. Montgomery, her nephew, and became the mother of Mary Ann Montgomey, wife of Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest. Mary's daughter, Margaret Ann Cowan married a cousin, Alfred M. Cowan, who is buried near Mary in Spring Hill Cemetery. Mary's other children were Rachel Cowan; Julia Doak Cowan, wife of John Davis; Martha McChesney Cowan, wife of John O. Griffis of Lincoln County, Tennessee and also of Campbell Washington McCord; and John Cowan who married Anna Brown.
