- ↑ Jacobus in FANH names the wife of Theophilus Merriman as Mary Mattoon as cited above. Note that the marriage record of Theophilius Merriman in 1714 names his wife as "Mary Tune", not Mattoon (Barbour records for Wallingford). There is a John "TOONE, TOON, TUNE" having children in Wallingford at the same time period (1707-1730) that may be a sibling? The History of Northfield, p. 496, says Theophilus Merriman m. 9 May 1714 Mary ---, who m. (2) Benjamin Miller and she d. 6 Jan 1782, age 84. The basis for Jacobus identifying her as Mary Mattoon is not clear, and may be incorrect.
The only Mary Mattoon who was both age and geographically appropriate to be the wife of Theophilus Merriman was born at 25 July 1697 at Springfield, daughter of Philip and Sarah (Hawkes) Mattoon. However, all secondary sources including Jacobus, in Hale, House, p. 717, have her marrying one John Miller 2d (see Family:John Miller and Mary Mattoon (1)), but only an intention is found in the records (published 13 September 1713 at Springfield). A search of available records finds no actual marriage record for this couple and no record of any children of this couple in either Springfield or Enfield from 1713 to 1716, inclusive. John Miller married 5 January 1715/16 at Enfield (int. Springfield 26 Nov 1715), one Priscilla Hale; they had a son, John, born at Springfield 28 September 1716. Consequently, most secondary sources, e.g., Descendants of Philip Mattoon, p. 5 (borrowing required), assume Mary, the daughter of Phillip Mattoon, died by 1715 (no death record is found).
However, there are at least three John Millers in Springfield at the time. We can probably rule out the John Miller who married Mary Beamon as too old. But there is a John Miller, b. 1688, s/o Lazarus, and a John Miller, b. 1690, s/o Obadiah. Both of these would be of marrying age, and could account for the intention to Mary (called John 2d), intention and marriage to Priscilla (called simply, John), without requiring either the death of Mary in 1715 or her marriage to Theophilus Merriman. Further, there is also an intention of John Miller 2d of Springfield 1720/21 to Abigail Lee. Clearly more research is needed.
