Mary Ellen Kelly was born in Birkenhead in 1887, daughter of a charwoman named Bridget Kelly. Mary was raised by her grandparents, Dennis Kelly and Catherine Ralston - who went on to have another child of their own the following year. Thus Mary had an uncle who was younger than her.

In 1910, aged 22, Mary married a George Coppack from Grimsby. They do not appear to have had any children. They married in Liverpool and appear in the 1911 census living at 18 Circus Street in Liverpool.

The 1939 Register, taken at the start of the Second World War, finds Mary and George living at 45 Beaufort Square in Birkenhead, with Mary described as doing "unpaid domestic duties", whilst George was a crane driver. George died in 1941, aged 53.

In the early 1950s, Mary lived with her widowed uncle Patrick Albert (who was only three years older than her) at 21 Adelphi Street, Birkenhead. Mary died in 1959, aged 71.
