Facts and Events
Mary Ann Hemmings was baptised on 30th January 1820 at Tilsworth in Bedfordshire, daughter of a straw plaiter called Charlotte Hemmings, formerly Sinfield, and her husband James Hemmings, an agricultural labourer.
In 1836, aged 16, she married a Joseph Kempson from the nearby village of Totternhoe. They married at Totternhoe, but then returned to Tilsworth where their first two children were born.
The 1841 census finds Mary living with Joseph and two children at Billington (then a hamlet in the parish of Leighton Buzzard, but later a parish in its own right). She is also listed on census night with her daughter staying with her parents back at Tilsworth.
In March 1843, Joseph was convicted of stealing pears and sentenced to a year in Bedford Gaol. Mary gave birth to her third child about the same time that Joseph was convicted.
Whilst Joseph was still in jail Mary died, aged just 24. She was buried at Stanbridge on Christmas Eve 1843.

ch. 30 Jan 1820, Tilsworth, Bedfordshire: Mary Ann daughter of James & Caroline Hemings
This baptism has been identified on the basis that Mary said she was born between 1816 and 1821 in Bedfordshire in the 1841 census and her burial record implies she was born about 1819. Also, her first two children were baptised at Tilsworth, and her daughter Mary Ann appears in the 1851 census living with Mary's mother. Although Mary's mother's name is here recorded as Caroline, the sequence of baptisms at Tilsworth around this time suggest her name was actually Charlotte.
